The Learning Support Centre is located in FW11, on the first floor of Firwood, and offers a comprehensive range of study skills support which all students participate in for one hour per week, their Learning Skills session, which is part of the tutorial programme.
During their Learning Skills session, students can access:
Students have set activities, on a range of study skills, careers and life skills topics. There is also set time for one to one reviews with their Progress Tutors. In addition, students have the opportunity to work on subject specific extension topics to broaden their knowledge and skills in their academic study areas.
There are a range of online subject specific materials, including past examination papers and extra activities in each subject area. The Learning Skills Centre has sufficient computers for every student, and we also have a quiet area for those wishing to read or work quietly in small self-support groups.
Teaching staff
In addition to the Progress Tutors, there is an Additional Support Tutor available in the room to offer additional study skills support to students who need it. Students may self- refer or be referred by teachers or tutors. Some EAL support is also available on a Wednesday afternoon for students whose first language is not English.
Support for students with learning differences
Specialist tutors are also available to support students who have learning differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and Asperger’s Syndrome. Tutors are qualified to assess students who may need special examination arrangements at sixth form level.
In Class Support
Educational support assistants are also available to assist those students with high needs. Support offered includes mobility support, note taking and preparing specialist resources such as enlarged handouts for students who are visually impaired.
Accessing Support
Students are sometimes referred for help by their tutors or teachers but all students are able to access support themselves at any time, through the Learning Support Centre, by speaking to their Progress Tutor or the Additional Learning Support Tutor based in the room.
