Spiritual Life

At Xaverian, we believe in nurturing the whole person, helping each member of our community to become the best version of themselves they can be. This means that we encourage all members of our community to explore and develop their own spirituality regardless of religious practice. We also want every student under our care to understand that they are so much more than just a set of exam results. They are as worthy of God’s love the day after their exams as they are the day before and we hope that the amount of care that we put into nurturing every single Xaverian has a lasting and positive effect.

Our College mission began back in the 1500’s with our Patron, Saint Francis Xavier who travelled all over the world to provide education and to spread God’s message to those he met. His work went on to inspire our founder, Theodore Ryken, who began the education of the Manchester youth over 150 years ago.  Since then, it has been the mission of Xaverian staff to ensure that all those who pass through our halls are supported in a loving and inclusive community and in turn, spread that same love to others beyond our campus.

There a plenty of opportunities to participate in inclusive, multifaith celebrations and everyone is very welcome to join us in the Chapel for our regular services;

Week Day Masses:

An important part of being a Catholic community is celebrating Mass together but this celebration is open to everyone, regardless of faith.

Mass (followed by a lunch) takes place on Monday and Friday 1:00pm – 1:30pm

We would love for as many people as possible to get involved in our weekday Masses. If you are interested in reading or playing music during mass, or are commissioned as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and would like to serve during our Masses, please get in touch.

Morning Prayer – takes place every day (except Thursday) between 8:30am – 8:50am. Our service begins some silent, meditative time to reflect on your own needs and then we pray together for the needs and intentions are all those in our community.

We would love for some input into our Prayer Services, so if anyone would like to make any suggestions, or to organise an alternative service (including prayers from other faiths) we would really appreciate any new and imaginative ideas.

Message from the Chaplain

My role as Xaverian’s Chaplain began mid-2016 and I could not have been luckier to have met and worked with such humble, dedicated and compassionate individuals as those I have met at Xaverian College. Throughout their time at Xaverian, our students nurture their spirituality through many acts of faith, kindness and charity and in harmony, we really do make small things grow.

From the Macmillan Coffee Morning, to the Senior Citizens Christmas Party, to the Cornerstone Big Sleepout, members of Xaverian spread the love of God to each other and throughout our wider communities. I am so proud to know these wonderful groups of young adults who are constantly moved to positive action because they will not stand back and watch others suffer. They truly reflect that one golden rule that Christ left for us; that we love one another as God loves us.

It is always a privilege to watch as students of many different beliefs and faiths unite time after time to act on the Xaverian Mission with zeal, whether it is through joining us for Mass or leading our Walk of Remembrance, the respect they show for each other and their differences is a true sign of maturity and open-mindedness.

Our students truly understand what it means to be a member of the Xaverian community and I hope that even when they move on from us, they will continue to have a positive impact on the world around us through their thoughts, words and actions.
