Students at Xaverian have an outstanding record of success

We are fortunate to have such dedicated students and every year achievement at all levels has improved consistently.

Our results are consistently above national averages, and our value-added scores show that students who come to Xaverian make spectacular progress. In 2011 over 600 Xaverian students progressed to university.

There are many reasons why you might wish to study at Xaverian – here are just five.

  • Consistently high academic achievement
  • Exceptionally high levels of support
  • Unique campus and a superb learning environment
  • Outstanding value-added – at Xaverian you will make progress
  • Warm, caring and friendly atmosphere

Achievements 2010 - 2011

“Best results ever” has become something of a cliché these days, with an unlikely number of schools or Colleges displaying a large banner on their gates proclaiming as much. Real credit must be given to Xaverian staff and students, however, who really did surpass all previous achievements and deliver superb results. An overall pass rate of 99.7% is hard to improve on but what was impressive this year was the fact that a remarkable 55% of A-level grades were at A*-B, with 25% of grades overall at A*-A.

There were many individual successes, with a number of students scooping straight A grades including many at A* but some of the College highlights this year include:

At A2 Level:

  • An overall pass rate of 99.7%
  • Out of 2006 papers taken there were only 7 fails
  • A*, A and B grades were  55%
  • A* - A grades at 25%
  • 81.7% of grades were A* - C
  • The vast majority of subjects had a 100% pass rate

In Applied subjects – BTECs:

  • 100% pass rate in BTECs – for the sixth year running!
  • A stunning 87.5% of grades were Distinctions and Merits (equivalent to A-C)
  • A quarter of all grades were D* - starred distinctions

There were some outstanding successes in particular courses at A2 Level:

  • In English Literature there were 15 A* grades awarded – almost 20% of the total entries
  • Further Mathematics – 85% A*-B
  • Maths - 20 A* grades and 68% A*-B
  • Sociology – 68% A*-B
  • Economics – 65% A*-B
  • 35 A* grades in Physics, Chemistry and Biology – and a further 75 A grades
  • French, German and Spanish – 80% A*-B
  • Law – 34% A*-A
  • Politics – 34% A*-A and 63% A*-B
  • Film Studies – 64% A*-B
  • Music – 74% A*-B

High Achievers

We are rightly proud of all our students, but would also like to take the opportunity to recognise our high achievers. The students below all achieved at least 3 A grades in their A2 courses. Congratulations to them all.

With an impressive Value Added score as well, suggesting that the vast majority of our students achieve either at or above their target grades, the whole college should be proud of what clearly has been a year of achievement and success. There are, though, those students who deserve individual acknowledgement for achievements that have led to them gaining places at institutions that, rightly, can claim to hold a world class reputation and to whom we offer further congratulation.

Oxbridge

In September 11 students took up their places at Oxford and Cambridge universities, making a total of 32 students who have gained such a distinction in the last 5 years. The figure for this year seems to be higher than any other state school or college in the northwest of England and certainly more than most independent schools. Their success was covered in the local press, including the Manchester Evening News and two students were interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester on their morning show.

Congratulations must also be offered to Amy Spray, who received an offer from Oxford but was unable to take up her place, and Martin Walsh, Jacob Rack, Dan Woods and Charlie Evans all of whom were “pooled “ by Cambridge and were perhaps unlucky not to be selected by a college.

Drama successes

In the world of Drama, RADA (the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts) is probably as prestigious as Oxbridge and we were delighted to have two students offered places, the second time we have achieved this distinction. Congratulations then to Anna Krippa and Tom Verey.

We were also delighted to get two students into the Central School of Speech and Drama which also has an International reputation for its dramatic excellence.

Music successes

Links with the Royal Northern College of Music have always been very strong and this year we were delighted that Sarah Miller (flute), Joe Luckin (drums) and Michael Taylor (voice) were awarded places at this prestigious institution. In addition, Robert Williams (cello) took up his unconditional scholarship place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Sporting success

Congratulations to Damien Hughes and Ben Askew who both secured places on prestigious sports courses at Loughborough and Durham respectively.

Science and medicine

There were many successes for Xaverian scientists; in total 57 students began courses on medical-related degrees, including areas as diverse as Zoology, Neuroscience, Radiography, Biomedical Science and Pharmacology.

The students below gained places on highly competitive courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Science.
