Wheelchair rugby with Sale Sharks

Xaverian College recently hosted a team of specialist coaches from Sale Sharks in order to raise students’ understanding of the provision of sports activities for people with disabilities. The day focused on two sports designed for people with a disability or visual impairment – wheelchair rugby and goal ball.

Over forty BTEC sports students all had the opportunity to learn about, and participate in both of these activities. The wheelchair rugby activities in particular were greatly enjoyed by everybody and was backed up with a classroom session that provided a real insight into strategies to make sport more accessible for everybody. Overall, the day was a real success that combined fun with valuable practical knowledge and experience and linked in with the sport development unit of the course.

PE teacher Phill Anthony said, “What an amazing experience we had with the team from Sale Sharks. It is so important to make sport as accessible and inclusive as possible to get everyone involved. Many of our students will go down the coaching and leadership route and this provides them with invaluable experience of the challenges and rewards of specialist coaching.”
