27 Xaverian science students have been successful in receiving their offers to study at competitive medical schools across the UK. The students joined Xaverian’s Medics, Dentists and Vets (MDV) Programme, which helped navigate them through the process of researching and applying for places on Medical, Dentistry, Veterinary Science Degrees.
Due to the competitive nature of gaining places at medical schools, the MDV Programme is essential to ensure students acquire the attributes, evidence and qualifications to prove they are ready to take the next step after Xaverian. Medicine degrees have proved to be the most popular with 23 students choosing this route, three students chose Dentistry and one Veterinary Science.
Isabel Lee, formerly from Manchester Enterprise Academy Central (Fallowfield), is studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Fine Art at Xaverian and joined the MDV programme in Year 12 to support her chances of gaining a place at medical school, and commented: “Xavierian’s MDV programme helped me with my application to study medicine by providing me with opportunities such as lectures and discussions which I could add to my personal statement and talk about during my interviews. The programme also supported me with tips for the admissions tests and mock interviews to help me prepare.
“I am planning to study medicine at the University of Sheffield. I chose this degree because medicine is an evolutionary career in which I will always be learning new things that I can apply to improve the lives of others. My time at Xaverian flew by so quickly and I had such a great time. I am looking forward to my future and am excited for what it holds for me.”
Former pupil of Newman RC College, Kyle Su, is following A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), said: “The College’s MDV programme gave me a space to be able to share ideas with people of similar interests and let me create newsletters to expand mine and other people’s knowledge on the subject as well.
“I’m going to study Dentistry at the University of Manchester and, following this, I hope to specialise in Dental Public Health, which is the science and art of preventing oral diseases, promoting oral health to the population rather than the individual. Dentistry is related to the skills and hobbies I have developed over time, and I have previously had many learning opportunities in Dentistry. I’m excited about what the future holds for me and relieved to have passed some big hurdles so far!”
Asser Nada, who is studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at Xaverian, commented: “I chose Xaverian because of the diverse mix of students and it has a great reputation as one of the best, if not the best, place for doing A Levels. Coming to Xaverian for me means taking two forms of transport and long travel times but I do this because of how outstanding the college is at educating students and having a great environment.
“I’m going to study Medicine at Lancaster University and start my career as a general practitioner. I was inspired by my relatives and learnt that it is a very hard and demanding career but also extremely rewarding. Xaverian is a place I will always remember, and I am sure I will come back after I am finished with my education here to help any future MDV applicants and see familiar faces again.”
Priyanka Nayar, who is a Chemistry Teacher at Xaverian and leads on the MDV Programme, commented: “It is becoming ever more competitive to gain a place at universities offering these courses and our students have done amazingly well to make their applications stand out and perform so well in the rigorous admissions tasks they had to undertake. I am so proud that so many of our students have gained offers of places and I’m sure the students will meet and exceed the grades they need. I’m so proud of them all and I look forward to hearing their results when they are released later in the summer, I’m sure they will all perform brilliantly.”
