Learning Support

Supporting your transition to College

Our support starts before you even arrive. We work closely with you, your family, your school, your local authority, and any other professionals involved in your education – so we understand your needs from day one.

Depending on what’s most helpful for you, this might include:

How We Can Support You

Supporting you during your time at College

Once you’re enrolled, your teachers will be made aware of your additional needs and reasonable adjustments, both inside and outside the classroom.

If you need further support at College, you can see a member of the ALS team who will be able to arrange this for you. Additional support may include:

  • Help with organisation, planning and study skills
  • Strategies to build confident, independent learning
  • Exam Access Arrangements and specialist examination support
  • Advice and adjustments for physical, sensory or medical needs
  • Support with social communication, confidence and managing College life

Our goal is always to help you become a more confident, resilient and independent student.

Exam Access Arrangements are adjustments that remove barriers so you can access exams fairly – whether you have a disability, learning difficulty, medical condition, or another identified need.

Arrangements are based on evidence of need and your normal way of working, in line with JCQ regulations. These might include:

  • Extra time
  • Supervised rest breaks
  • Use of a word processor or specialist software
  • Reading pens or text-to-speech technology
  • A scribe
  • Modified examination papers
  • An alternative examination room

Our team will guide you through the assessment process and make sure everything is in place for you.

If you have an Education, Health and Care Plan, your support is planned around your individual goals and aspirations. We start working with you and your family before you enrol, and where possible, we’re happy to attend your Year 11 Annual Review meeting.

Support is about more than academic results. We help you prepare for adulthood, further study, and whatever comes next.
