Multi-talented students performing at annual Easter Concert

Over 140 Xaverian College students, alumni and staff recently took to the stage in the world-famous Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) for a night of captivating music performances, as part of their annual Easter concert.

A highlight within Manchester’s musical calendar, the Easter concerts give students the chance to get on stage and share their talents with the local community.

With the largest sixth form Music department in the North of England, the College prides itself on providing endless opportunities inside and outside of the classroom from the moment students start their College journey.

Thomas Scaife, who is yet to start his college journey at Xaverian in September this year, got the opportunity to join the music department and perform alongside current students at the concert. Commenting on his experience, he said: “The Easter Concert was phenomenal! The music felt alive, and I think everyone around the concert hall could see how much passion and energy had been invested into making the evening a great success. I’ve been lucky to attend many previous events as a member of the audience, and the music chosen is always tailored to making it an unforgettable experience for both the listener and those performing.”

Thomas plans to join Xaverian to study A Levels in Biology and Music, alongside BTEC Music Technology. He continued: “Being able to rehearse and perform with the Music department was a great experience and I enjoyed every moment. It has given me a real insight into what to expect when I start College and has inspired me to play to the best of my abilities.”

As the concert’s Compères, students, Sophia Bell and Tyler Eckersall brought sophistication, style, and comedy as the concert’s comperes and other performances throughout the evening included:

  • String Orchestra – Directed by Duncan Reid
  • Big Band – Directed by Mike Cavanagh
  • Flute Group – Directed by Jennifer Dyson
  • Clarinet Choir – Directed by Ben Pinto
  • Brass Band – Directed by Mick Cavanagh
  • Sax Group – Directed by Anthony Brown
  • Concert Choir – Directed by Ged Marciniak
  • Soul Band – Directed by Luke Moulsher
  • Chamber Choir – Directed by Eleanor Jarvis and accompanied by Louis De Satgé
  • Percussion Ensemble – Directed by Laurie Agnew
  • Orchestra – Directed by Andrew Levendis

Andrew Levendis, Director of Music, said: “We encourage students to be flexible with their sound, enabling them to gain a variety of skills. It’s why we’re able to put together such a wide range of performances at our concerts – our students really are multi-talented!

“You get a real buzz and a euphoric feeling when preforming live. That’s why we ensure there are numerous opportunities for students to showcase their abilities throughout the year, including our esteemed Easter, Summer and Christmas concerts at the RNCM.

“I’m incredibly proud that we are able to offer students, who have applied to study with us in September, the opportunity to perform on stage with us. They were all really excited, and it was a great foretaste of what to expect as they start their journey with us. Well done everyone!”

The concert hall filled with applause as the Xaverian Orchestra officially closed the evening with a remarkable performance of Symphonic Marches – J.Williams.
