Community Culture Day is a chance for Year 12 students to take a step back from lessons and celebrate their achievements in the first year of sixth form and join with their fellow students in showcasing the diverse range of cultures within the College.
The focus for the day was creating and selling food from the different cuisines from around the world, with all proceeds going to support CAFOD and the relief effort in Gaza.
The Campus was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm as students shared their heritage and cultures through delicious food, captivating artwork, traditional dress, henna tattoos, face painting and engaging displays. Students also got the chance to play giant games, inflatable games and take part in a staff-versus-students’ football match.
Music students and college bands played their part in the day by performing songs in the talent show. The eventual winner, Chantelle Murugi, former St Bede’s College pupil, currently studying A Levels in English Language, Law and Psychology, wowed the crowd with a performance of ‘Reflection’ from the movie Mulan.
Health and Social Care Cambridge Technical student, Molly Turner, commented: “During the Community Culture Day, I helped out with the bake sale, and we raised over £300. Being involved in the day was so much fun, I loved seeing everyone representing their countries and cultures and seeing the buzz of people being involved in stalls, live music and games. It was such an exciting day and I enjoyed being a part of it!”
Former Manchester Communication Academy pupil, Al-Betel Tesso, added: “The day was an amazing opportunity to celebrate all the different cultures we have within the Xaverian community. I enjoyed the talent show and taking pictures with my friends, old and new.”
Xaverian Xtras Co-leads, Prashant Duggal and Ged Marciniak, who were part of the team that organised the event, commented: “The event is the highlight of the academic calendar and many students talk about it as being one of their stand-out Xaverian memories while they are student here. It was amazing to see all the students come together and share the cuisines and traditional dress from their cultures, it made the event vibrant and colourful and enjoyable for all. Above all, the event raised £382 for CAFOD and the work they are doing for those affected by the conflict in Gaza.”
