Xaverian College students recently stepped beyond the classroom and deep into the past, taking part in two immersive experiences that brought the ancient world thrillingly to life.
On Wednesday 19th June, students visited the University of Liverpool for an Ancient World Student Day – a hands-on exploration of archaeology, mythology and classical history. Taking place in the university’s Garstang Museum and the World Museum in Liverpool city centre, the day offered a unique mix of academic insight and interactive learning.
Students had the rare chance to examine real Greek and Roman coins, handle ancient artefacts, and take part in a Lego storytelling workshop that saw mythological scenes recreated brick by brick. Highlights included exhibitions on mummies, fossils and human evolution, and a fascinating tour of the Garstang Museum.
Ruby McClafferty, former pupil at Oasis Academy MediaCityUK and studying A Levels in Ancient History, Classical Civilisation and Geography at Xaverian, called it: “An entertaining and educational day out,” while Zoe Friemel, previously a pupil at Marple High School and studying A Levels in Ancient History and Classical Civilisation alongside English Literature, said it gave her a real insight into what studying the ancient world at university might be like. Holly Shore, former Lostock High School pupil, was especially taken with the tactile elements, commenting: “The Lego building was great fun, and the coin handling was amazing, especially the Cretan coin with the labyrinth on it!”
Just two weeks later, on Tuesday 1st July, students ventured to the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds for Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum, a major international exhibition making its UK debut. Featuring rare artefacts from Pompeii and the Colosseum itself, the exhibition brought ancient Rome’s blood-soaked arenas and fierce fighters to life with vivid reconstructions and interactive displays.
Students explored original gladiator helmets, dramatic models of the Colosseum, and hands-on exhibits that put them in the sandals of Rome’s most famous warriors. Billy Rodd, studying A Levels in Ancient History, Biology and Chemistry, described the experience as “genuinely incredible”, while Emily Thompson, former Sale High School pupil, was especially impressed by the Colosseum model, adding: “It was very cool and really brought the history to life.”
Beyond gladiators, the museum also showcased global arms and armour. Year 12 students, Rafia and George, enjoyed the Indian and Mughal exhibits, and reflected on how different cultures designed their equipment, offering a global perspective on ancient warfare.
Will Dearnaley, Ancient History and Classical Civilisation Teacher at Xaverian, praised the value of such trips: “Experiences like these are vital for bringing ancient history to life beyond the classroom. Seeing real artefacts and world-class exhibitions sparks curiosity and deepens understanding in ways textbooks simply can’t. Our department continues to thrive, with over 100 students currently studying Ancient History and Classical Civilisation. We’re proud to offer a dynamic, enriching curriculum, and days like this show just how exciting and relevant the ancient world remains for our students today.”
Both trips gave students a powerful, hands-on encounter with ancient history, combining creativity, discovery and academic depth. Whether exploring myth through Lego, handling ancient coins, or standing face-to-face with a gladiator’s helmet, these unforgettable experiences reminded students that the past is anything but distant.
