Business students host charity fundraising event

Event management is a fast-growing business sector and the demand for employees with the organisational skills to deliver a successful event is increasing.

Business BTEC students recently put their skills and knowledge to the test and hosted a fundraising event, on-Campus, for Xaverian staff and students raising over £350 for charity.

As part of Unit 4: Managing an Event, Students are required to work as part of a team to plan, co-ordinate and manage an event. Prior to the event, students have to research, trail different planning tools, and set objectives to ensure the event is a success. They are also tasked with generating marketing campaigns to build awareness.

On the day of the event, each team ran a stall, either selling products or hosting interactive activities to raise money for Save the Children and its current appeals for Turkey, Syria and Ukraine.

Omar Omar, who is currently studying A Level Psychology alongside Business BTEC, said: “The event was an unforgettable experience that helped me develop my business skills, such as organisation and budgeting. We were able to assign roles between ourselves, which helped me develop my teamwork and communication skills. My team ran sweet cone stall and not only did we sell out, we made a great profit!”

Isra Ehbal, former East Manchester Academy pupil, added: “The event was very fun and challenging, as it required a lot of organisation and effort. During the process of planning and running the event I developed many skills such as negotiation and communication skills, which will be really useful in the future as I’d love to have a career in Human Resources (HR). My favourite part of the event was negotiating and interacting with other students about the prices of my products.”

Yaseen Choudhury, Teacher of Business BTEC, said: “Our students did an amazing job planning and executing their fundraising event! It is always interesting to see the different ways in which they approach this unit and showcase their skills. Well done everyone!”

The Business BTEC course at Xaverian gives students an introduction into all the basics, from Finance and Management to Marketing and Customer Service. Students have the opportunity to address challenges regularly faced by businesses and learn skills crucial to their career success. One thigs for sure, studying this practical-based courses will inspire you and give you a solid grounding in the art and science of building a business.
