“I chose to study at Xaverian because it seemed like such a nice environment to study in. The campus is amazing and the atmosphere is really friendly. I also do Classical Civilisation that is a subject not taught in many schools, so I was immediately drawn to Xaverian where I could study Classics. An important part of the course is reading literature from the period and having class discussions. We are currently reading Homer’s Greek epic, ‘The Odyssey’, and we are analysing what the author has done to make it exciting and how certain characters are presented. We then look at modern critical interpretations to help form thoughtful and balanced arguments.
We recently visited the National Theatre Archives to watch ‘Oedipus Rex’, to look at and talk about the two sides of the character of Oedipus, which we will use to answer essay questions, ‘Did he have a choice or could he have done things differently?’ We also consider a scenario where, if we were in a similar situation, what would we have done differently. Next up we have a trip to The British Museum, in London. As part of the Xtras Programme, our tutors offer Latin and Greek for beginners which helps us further immerse ourselves in the period and this is also useful if we continue studying the subject at university. We also get the chance to visit Greece to see first-hand the land and its artefacts to bring this period of time to life.”
