University of Oxford provides unique opportunity for Xaverian College students

Four students at Xaverian College have been accepted onto the ultra-competitive, academically-intensive, OxNet Programme, run by one of the UK’s leading universities.

OxNet is University of Oxford widening participation organisation which aims to give talented and gifted students from underrepresented areas access to high-quality, degree-level study.

Participation in one of the year-long OxNet Programmes includes a variety of activities, such as: a Study Skills Day, a 6-week Seminar Series, an Easter Essay Competition, a Summer School, and a Twilight Talks series.

Anree Bektashi-Brown and Jacob Duddridge have gained places on the Science Programme, which aims to explore several aspects of science from artificial intelligence to protein-folding chemistry.

Jacob said: “I was lucky to have already been involved with University of Oxford initiatives whilst studying my GCSEs at Priestnall School, so I knew before I even joined Xaverian that I wanted to be part of the College’s Oxbridge Programme.

“So far, we have been learning how to apply Python coding to a variety of scientific disciplines, Sing coding for modelling robot movements, and much more, which has really stretched my knowledge base and changed the way I think about approaching tasks.”

Anree added: “Some of the topics we have been exploring are incredibly challenging but very interesting. We’ve also found out more about the careers in STEM, which is really useful as we head into Year 13 and start to think about our next steps. There are further activities planned for over the summer months, which I’m really excited about – I just love being around likeminded people!”

Beth Walsh and Clare Marsland we’re also successful in gaining places on the Languages and Philosophy and World Religions Programmes.

Hayley Flanagan, OxNet Link and Teacher of History at Xaverian, said: “Here at Xaverian College we not only have outstanding provision, our dedicated staff are here to guide and support students to ensure they develop their talents and reach their full potential.

“Anree, Jacob, Clare and Beth, have an overwhelmingly positive attitude towards their learning and the OxNet Programme will continue to challenge their knowledge, skills and behaviours to ensure they excel in their A Level studies and feel more prepared for their next steps.

“We’re incredibly proud to have officially joined OxNet as their newest ‘Hub’ back in November 2022, and extremely excited to be championing local interests and overseeing the activities in the North-West region.”
