On the 10th February 2025, Xaverian Alumni Thomas Leese, along with Assistant Divisional Lead/Film Studies Curriculum Leader, Phil Drinkwater and Media Studies Curriculum Leader, Jacquie Shirley, headed to the British Film Institute in London to celebrate at the 11th annual Moving Image Awards ceremony.
The Moving Image Awards recognise and celebrate the best moving image productions from students undertaking WJEC Eduqas qualifications in Film and Media across the UK. The awards provide talented filmmakers the springboard they need to stand out in their university applications and as they enter their careers.
Thomas, former Chorlton High School pupil, completed his A Levels in Business, Graphic Communication and Media Studies at Xaverian in summer 2024. His music video ‘America has a Problem’, was shortlisted and on the evening of the event went on to win the One to Watch Award.
Jacquie, who taught Thomas during his time at Xaverian, commented: “I couldn’t be prouder of Thomas winning the One to Watch Award! Their dedication, creativity and hard work has truly paid off, and this recognition is so well deserved. It’s been incredible to watch their talent grow, and I have no doubt this is just the beginning of an exciting journey in film and media. A huge congratulations!”
Phil, who was also asked by the Exam Board to be a judge for the Short Film and Screenplay Awards, added: “It was a tremendous event, with so much to celebrate for Xaverian College. We encourage all Film and Media students to submit films they produce as part of their coursework for other awards like the Moving Image Awards, as it gives them an opportunity to showcase their talent on a much larger scale to a wider audience and gain recognition for their talent.”
