Year 12 Chemistry students have again excelled at the University of Cambridge National Chemistry Competition with 23 students gaining awards out of 17,000 who entered across the country. High-flying chemistry students take part in the competition to delve further into the subject and test their knowledge by answering challenging Chemistry questions on a 90-miunte online test. 

Xaverian students who achieved excellent end-of-year exam results were invited to take part in the competition and all students performed brilliantly to achieve a total of 23 awards with 1 gold, 5 silver and 17 copper awards. 

Designed for students who wish to continue studying the subject at university, the questions are set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists, and take students significantly beyond the A Level syllabus and encourages them to think about science in the way they would on a Degree programme.  

Teacher of Chemistry at Xaverian, Richard Short, commented: “The competition aims to challenge students interested in Chemistry to think about the questions set in unconventional ways to come to a solution. As well as further increasing their interest in the subject, it provides an excellent platform for Chemistry students wishing to take their studies further at university and beyond as a career. 

“I am so proud of the Xaverian students who took part in the competition and the results they achieved. Taking part in competitions such as these really supports the development of student’s analytical and processing skills in the subject and will be an invaluable addition to their application when they apply for university in Year 13.”
