This year’s A Level results shine a spotlight on many talented individuals who are not only excelling academically but embodying the future-ready capabilities critical for Greater Manchester’s workforce. 

Achieving top grades in English Language & Literature A, Film Studies A*, and History B, Lillian Long, former Flixton Girls School pupil, is set to pursue English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University.  

She said: “I was a mixture of happy and relieved this morning collecting my results. I have always loved writing, and I know it will be a part of my future, so I am excited to delve further into it as I move to university. English at Xaverian is very broad, you learn so much and have a lot of freedom to share your opinions and develop your style. When I first started College, I was nervous about making new friends but the people I have met here will be in my life for a very long time!”   

Through her studies, Lillian has honed communication, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving abilities – skills sought after in publishing, media, marketing, and beyond. 

Graduating with C grades in Classical Civilisation, History, and Sociology, Kiranjit Kaur heads to the University of Leeds to study Classical Civilisation.  

Commenting on her time at Xaverian she said: “I am moving onto a Russell Group university, where I know the lecturers are as enthusiastic as the teachers here at Xaverian. I have been able to immerse myself in Classical Civilisation over the last few years and the knowledge I have gained is phenomenal, I can’t wait to study it further. Xaverian is one of very few colleges that offer it as an A Level and have one of the largest cohorts of students studying it, this is what drew me in. It allowed us to have really deep conversations and dissect things collaboratively. My highlight at Xaverian is definitely the Community Culture Day, as it is a reminder that the College is filled with individuals from diverse backgrounds and that it doesn’t matter who you are, you will find your place here!”   

Her analytical and collaborative skills are essential for the region’s education and heritage industries – vital areas identified by the Greater Manchester Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP). 

Former St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy student, Tommy Yates, earned an A in Computer Science, A in Mathematics, A in Physics, and a B in his Extended Project Qualification. He will study Physics at the University of Sheffield.  

Tommy said: “I felt amazing when I saw my results! I was in so much shock, but it is an incredible feeling knowing all of the hard work has paid off. I have really enjoyed studying my subjects, but I think all of the extra-curricular activities that I was able to get involved with has been my highlight. It has really enriched my experience at Xaverian and opened up so many opportunities for me. I am honestly excited to keep studying Physics, and I am so grateful for the support everyone around me has given me to get to this point.” 

His combination of STEM expertise and teamwork experience is exactly what the UK’s science and engineering sectors need to drive innovation. 

With stellar results, A in English Language, A* in Graphic Communication, A* in Mathematics and A* in his EPQ, Justin Lai will study Architecture at the University of Liverpool. 

Looking back at his Xaverian journey, he commented: “I have studied hard over the last two years and that has all paid off! One of the standout memories for me is sitting with all of my friends and helping each other with homework. If one of us didn’t understand something, we were there to support each other and this is something really special. Going to university is exciting and getting to study a brand-new subject will be really interesting.”
