A record-breaking 11 Xaverian College A Level Film and Media Studies students have secured places on the highly prestigious BFI Film Academy, an incredible achievement that highlights the exceptional talent and ambition of students.
The course is hosted at HOME, Manchester’s multi-million-pound arts centre, whose patron is Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), and offers just 20 places across Greater Manchester each year. With over half of those places awarded to Xaverian students, this year’s success is nothing short of extraordinary.
Run by film industry professionals, the BFI Film Academy gives young filmmakers the opportunity to write, shoot, direct and edit a professional short film which will later be screened at the cinema. Over the past half term, students have been immersed in every stage of production, gaining first-hand experience of life on a film set and developing the technical and creative skills needed to succeed in the industry.
Saul Shlosberg, former pupil at Chorlton High School, said: “Film Studies is my favourite subject because it connects directly to my dream career. Getting onto the course after reapplying taught me the value of resilience and determination. The workshops with cinematographers and writers have deepened my understanding of every role on set, and working with others to create a short film for HOME Arts Centre has been an incredible experience. My goal is to make films that turn everyday moments into something extraordinary – and this course is the perfect step towards studying at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) and building my future in filmmaking.”
Megan Reynolds, who is currently studying A Levels in English Literature and Psychology alongside Film Studies, commented: “I chose Xaverian because of its amazing Film Studies course – not many colleges offer it, and the teachers here are so supportive. Film has always been my passion, whether I’m in front of or behind the camera. When I heard about the BFI Film Academy, I knew it was the perfect chance to learn more about the industry and gain real on-set experience. Only 18 people were accepted this year, so being chosen was such an exciting achievement. I’m especially looking forward to working on set design and prop work. This experience is giving me the skills and confidence I need to succeed in Film Studies and pursue a career in the film industry.”
Evan Cunliffe, who completed his GCSEs at Salford City Academy before joining Xaverian, added: “I also chose Xaverian because its Film Studies course offered the best opportunities to prepare me for a career in film. I also felt that Xaverian genuinely values its students and pushes them to reach their full potential. Film Studies is my favourite subject because it brings together my love for storytelling, art and photography, combining everything I’m passionate about. My teacher encouraged me to apply for the BFI Film Academy, and I’m so grateful I did. It’s a competitive programme, so being accepted still feels surreal. We’re learning about every aspect of filmmaking, from directing and cinematography to production design, and creating our own short film together. It’s been an amazing first step into the industry and has confirmed that film is where I want to be.”

Xaverian’s connection with the BFI Film Academy is long-established, with students having earned places every year since the programme began. Alumni have gone on to achieve remarkable success in the industry, including Tehreem Faisal, who has worked at Pinewood Studios on Indiana Jones 5 and the new Star Wars series for Disney+, and Issy Glenton, who served as an editorial assistant on Venom 2 and Black Widow and now works for Into Film, a national organisation supporting young filmmakers.
