Xaverian College students were recently given an invaluable insight into the world of psychology, thanks to an inspiring talk from Dr Amuda Agneswaran, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).
Around 40 students attended the session, which explored the wide range of career paths available in psychology, from clinical and educational psychology to research, counselling, and occupational roles.
Dr Agneswaran also provided an in-depth overview of the Psychology Degree at MMU, sharing details about course structure, placement opportunities, and the skills students develop throughout their studies.
As part of the session, she offered practical advice on writing strong personal statements and guidance on how to stand out when applying for psychology at university. Students were encouraged to think about the experiences and extracurricular activities they could pursue now to strengthen their future applications, from volunteering and work experience to independent research or wider reading.
Georgie Spink, former The Lowry Academy pupil, currently studying A Levels in English Literature and History alongside Psychology, commented: “I really enjoyed the MMU talk and found it very inspiring. I loved how passionate Dr Agneswaran was, and it was clear to see how psychology has enriched her life. Not only did she show us the amazing facilities and opportunities available at MMU, but she also introduced us to a wide range of jobs available post-graduation, some of which I have never even heard of before!”
The talk was organised by the College’s Psychology Team to help students broaden their understanding of the subject beyond the classroom and consider the many directions a Psychology Degree can take them.
“We wanted to get students thinking not just about studying psychology, but about how to make the most of their time at College to prepare for university and future careers,” said the Team.
Students left the talk inspired and motivated to explore their next steps in psychology, armed with expert advice from one of the region’s leading academic voices in the field.
