Xaverian College celebrate Oxbridge success

Eight exceptional Xaverian College students have received highly competitive offers to study at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Following months of intensive preparation and hard work with the support of a specialist Oxbridge team at the College, students recently received the news they had gained a place at universities which have been repeatedly ranked first and second in the UK and both are currently in the top 10 universities in the world.

An increasing number of Classical Civilisation students successfully apply to Oxbridge and this September, Jessica Scanlon, Lily Isaac and Abigail Pole, are due to progress to University of Oxford to study Classics with joint honours.

Jessica, who is currently studying A Level Drama and Theatre and English Literature alongside Classical Civilisation, said: “I am the first one in my family to apply for university! I got to take part in an online widening access summer school, which allowed me to find out more about student life, as well as equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed to submit a strong UCAS application.”

Lily and Abigail added: “We also attended summer schools, which were extremely helpful. You get an opportunity to meet so many new people interested in the same subject as you, which really helps boost your energy and confidence. You walk away feeling much more prepared for when you start. We’re lucky our tutors have great connections with top universities and within industry, as we wouldn’t have known about all of the options available to support us as we take our next steps.”

Jess, Lily and Abigail were all delighted when they received their offers and are most excited about being a part of a wider Classics community and learning from Oxford University’s expert tutors.

The breadth of subjects students have chosen to study, including Mathematics, History and Medicine, demonstrates the diversity of interests across the College.

Another student, who plans to study Law at University of Cambridge said: “When I saw the offer email, I was truly surprised. The prospect of studying at such a prestigious university is extremely exciting. I hope to become a Human Rights Lawyer in the future because I am passionate about protecting vulnerable people from exploitation and maltreatment. The application and interview processes were challenging, however I was lucky to be paired with a Xaverian Alumni, Robin, who mentored me and I had constant support from tutors, especially Miss Mason, who spent time with me writing my personal statement and Mr Gibson, who did mock interviews with me! I am really glad I made the decision to apply and am looking forward to new opportunities as I progress.”

Those set for Oxbridge continue a long tradition of high performing students from the College to secure prestigious Oxbridge offers. In recent weeks, hundreds more students at Xaverian College have received offers from other top UK universities, including, Durham University, University of St Andrews, The University of Edinburgh, Kings College London, University of Warwick and more.

Tony Knowles, Principal, said: “I am incredibly proud that so many of our students have been successful with their university applications this year. Here at Xaverian College we not only have outstanding provision, our dedicated staff are there to guide and support students to ensure they develop their talents and reach their full potential. All students have demonstrated huge ambition, commitment and exceptional ability and we wish them every success for the future.”
