Xaverian College named one of eight Manchester schools awarded £20,000 funding towards STEM subjects

ENTHUSE Partnership in collaboration with AstraZeneca have awarded £20,000 to eight schools in the Manchester area to help them raise the profile of STEM-related subjects.

Xaverian College, alongside Loreto High School Chorlton, St Peter’s RC High School, Our Lady’s RC High School, St Matthew’s RC High School, St Paul’s RC High School, The Barlow RC High School, Loreto Sixth Form College will benefit from the funding over the next two years.

ENTHUSE Partnerships bring schools and colleges together to work collaboratively and are designed to inspire young people into STEM subjects and STEM-related careers. The partnerships have significant benefits for teachers, young people and employers – transforming both the educational culture around STEM in schools and young people’s achievement and aspirations. Schools and colleges taking part receive access to continued professional development, leading educational resources, STEM Ambassadors and teacher placements. With links to local businesses and industry, our learners gain a greater understanding of the STEM industry and the possible career paths.

Lisa King, External Science Liaison, AstraZeneca, said: “AstraZeneca is delighted to be partnering with this group of schools, and made the decision to support the Manchester partnership following the success of our first partnership with schools near AstraZeneca’s Discovery Centre in Cambridge. We are keen to build a long relationship with schools with measurable outcomes and benefits to all students involved and the Enthuse Partnership is a core part of the AstraZeneca STEM outreach programme in the UK.”

Tony Knowles, Principal at Xaverian College, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to work collaboratively with other schools and AstraZeneca to support students across Manchester to raise aspirations and provide better understanding of the world of work, apprenticeships and how important STEM industries are in our future. STEM subjects form an integral part of our curriculum and we are excited to be a part of this exciting partnership.”

Over the two-year programme AstraZeneca will also be delivering early careers talks, meet the apprentice events, webinars and practical Medicine Maker science sessions – all created to inspire the students and build up their science capital, linking what they are learning in the classroom with its real-life practical application in our industry.

The Enthuse partnership is great for our employees too, providing them with the opportunity to make a positive impact and influence a young persons’ future in their community.
