A Level Ancient History and Classical Civilisation students at Xaverian College have returned from an unforgettable five-day journey through Greece, where they immersed themselves in the art, architecture and mythology of the ancient world. 

The trip, a highlight in the Classics Department’s annual calendar, took students across the heart of Greece, from Athens to Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae and Epidaurus, tracing the footsteps of philosophers, athletes and heroes whose stories have shaped Western civilisation. 

The adventure began in Athens, where students explored the Theatre of Dionysus and the Acropolis and its iconic monuments, including the Parthenon and the Agora. At the New Acropolis Museum, they saw first-hand the artistic and architectural masterpieces they had studied in class, deepening their understanding of ancient craftsmanship and culture. 

From there, the group travelled to Delphi, where they stood among the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo and learned about the Oracle whose prophecies once shaped the fate of empires. In Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games, students ran their own race on the original stadium track, complete with golden laurel wreaths for the winners! 

Further west, they explored Mycenae, uncovering the legendary citadel of King Agamemnon, before heading to Epidaurus, home to the ancient theatre renowned for its near-perfect acoustics. The trip concluded back in Athens with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, bringing their exploration of Greek civilisation full circle. 

The experience was transformative for many, offering not only a hands-on encounter with history but also a chance to grow personally and socially. 

Upon returning, students described the trip as an unforgettable highlight of their College journey to date:  

“Greece was such a remarkably beautiful place to discover. Waking up to the sun rising over the mountains was an experience like no other.” 

“An awesome trip… probably my favourite ever. The theatre at Epidaurus and the seaside town of Tolo were personal highlights.” 

 “It was an unbelievable, non-stop adventure. From stunning hotel balcony views to visiting the actual monuments we’ve studied, I was in genuine awe the whole time, and I made so many new friendships.” 

Many students reflected on how seeing these ancient sites in person transformed their understanding of classical civilisation: 

“It was amazing to see the things we read about in class right in front of us.” 

“Seeing the original artefacts behind the stories brought everything to life.” 

“The trip gave me a desire to travel more in the future.”

“This experience truly brings history to life,” said Will Dearnaley, Classical Civilisation Teacher, who organised the trip. “Students return, not only with a deeper understanding of the ancient world, but with memories and friendships that will stay with them forever.” 

As one student summed it up: “We stood where the ancients once stood, saw what they saw, and brought our studies vividly to life. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!”
